Biography

Russ Ricks, born July 15, 1958, in Rexburg, Idaho, grew up in an artistic family as Russell Eric Ricks, immersed in a childhood filled with creative pursuits. Though he faced social delays that led to isolation and bullying, Russ’s artistic talent shone early and brightly, setting the stage for an extraordinary creative journey.

Later in life, Russ discovered he was born with Complete Genesis of the Corpus Callosum (C-ACC), meaning the connection between his brain’s hemispheres was absent. Yet, remarkably, he thrived as a high-functioning individual, his creativity undimmed. Determined to overcome social hurdles, Russ joined a study at the University of California San Francisco and worked with specialists in Utah for two years, mastering communication skills that transformed his life.

Two pivotal moments in his eighth year fueled Russ’s triumphs. On his eigth birthday, he received his first oil paints and brushes, igniting a 24/7 passion for painting that became his lifeline and calling. That same year, a transformative spiritual experience deepened his resilience and inspired him to endure any challenge. This led him to author a book, *Remember*.  Today he prefers to channel his energy into his true love: artwork. As Russ says, “I’d rather put my time and energy into my art, which has always driven my main passion!”

Russ’s artistic foundation was further shaped by his father, Don Ricks, who founded Painting Vacations in 1970. This summer plein air school, led by Ukrainian Master Impressionist Sergei Bongart, drew students nationwide for 15 years. By college age, Russ had gained a top-tier studio arts education through the program. He later earned an Associate’s Degree in Art from Ricks College (BYU-I) and studied further at BYU in Utah. Today, Russ and his wife Karen have revived Painting Vacations in Central Utah, continuing his father’s legacy.

From a boy with a brush to a celebrated artist, Russ Ricks has turned trials into a vibrant triumph, creating a life and career defined by passion, perseverance, and artistic excellence.

Today, you’ll find Russ to be very friendly, sociable and easy to talk to and many say his past challenges have made him into the talented artist he is today!
